‘CHIP & PIN’ CARDS: INCREASING THE SECURITY OF CARDMEMBERS’ TRANSACTIONS
AMERICAN EXPRESS CARDS ARE MIGRATING TO ‘CHIP & PIN’; ENSURING MORE SECURE TRANSACTIONS
In future, all American Express Cards issued in South Africa will be ‘transaction secure’ ‘CHIP & PIN’ cards. Point-of-sale terminals provide step-by-step instructions or ‘prompts’ on how to complete your secure transaction. This will safeguard you against card fraud and disputed transactions. Instead of signing, Cardmembers will key in a four -digit PIN.
TIPS ON HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDE A SECURE ‘CHIP & PIN’ TRANSACTION
When purchasing at a retailer who has a chip-enabled point-of-sale device, your ‘CHIP & PIN’ Card will be inserted into the chip reader, not swiped. It will remain in the point-of-sale device for the duration of the secure transaction. The cashier will enter the sales transaction.
You will be requested to type in your Card PIN when you see the prompt ‘ENTER CLIENT PIN’. If you make a mistake, press ‘Clear’ and enter your PIN again. No signature is required; however, the merchant may request such.
For added security, remember to shield the PIN pad so that no one can see you entering your PIN.
Remember never share your PIN with anyone.
Don’t write down your PIN.
Don’t let anyone enter your PIN on your behalf.
WHAT IF YOUR CARD IS BLOCKED OR YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN YOUR PIN:
If your Card is blocked, pay by using another payment method and contact the nearest Nedbank branch.
If you have forgotten your PIN, please contact the nearest Nedbank branch.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ENTER THE INCORRECT PIN?
If you enter the incorrect PIN once or twice, you will be prompted to try again. However, if you enter it incorrectly a third time, even if at separate locations, your Card usage will be blocked as a security measure.
